Baby Antihistamine Use

What Is Periactin (Cyproheptadine)?

Periactin is an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Periactin works by blocking the action of histamine on H1 receptors, thereby relieving the symptoms of allergic reactions. In addition to blocking the actions of histamine, Periactin blocks the action of a chemical in the brain called serotonin (the chemicals involved in migraine).
