Introduction
This is the story of a young boy, who was the lone progeny of a family of labourer from Sheik Mohall koel.The family of three brother and their father had only one son-the lassa sheik or Ghulam Rossol Sheik.As there were many Ghulam of his name, he was called lassa.He laboured with some Mason and learned Masonery.This is story of death. He was killed by the Indian occupation forces in Sopure Kashmir, while boarding a bus to his village. He carried his tools and a bunch of faro’s for her daughter who was born just a few days back in his village Coelho was returning home on that Thursday to see her child but the fate has something else waiting him. He was brought dead and was unable to see her daughter.
The Koel sheiks HERAM SHIEK(upper shieks)
We have two tribes of shieks in Keol,one who live in an upper mohalla around the bank of a gama kohl,(10 VILLAGE CANAL) called as dehgame khol or gama khol or ten village khol.This mohlla was a bit rich and had relations with the Mir who were the chiffons of the village we call Macadam’s or nuberdars now. They had a status and were engaged in sheep and animal business. The rich shere gujrees of Sopur and Srinagar and at time Sumbal tehsils will approach them and purchase the best cows from this area. They were thus the middle man of the business and making a good respect and earning profits. They were not a labour class but tilled their land or land of Khawajas.,with whom they had relations too. Lassa did not belong to this community.
Benam shiek(Lower shieks)
They lived near the Koel- Malangam road. They were mostly sheep readers and in summer they will cultivate their land or work as labourers in the village, mostly in Khoja Mohlla for house constructions or with a local koel contractor known as ama koel.The usual contracts those days were the clearance of the debris of the zangir canal or construction of concrete bridges on the zangir canal at keol,zurkan,mangnipora,onagam .The removal of debris from the silting of the basins around nallas and canals underground bridges and escape at koel,truckpora-puteshe and onagam falls were the usual annual work contracts of Ama koel the contractor of the koel belonging to the Khowaja.
Wahab shiek or wahab mam
Wahab Sheik a wise shepherd of this bun shiek mohlla was often called wahab mam by the children who while playing in the open paddy fields during early spring used to see wahab mam with his flock at Kawe nar (crows stream).He was a wise shepherd owner and used to have his kangri in his lap and big posh lore (deodar OR SOME FOREST WEED stick) in his hands.I remember he will usually sit at a high place in Kawe nar and take care of his grazing flocks. I used to go there to bring lunch to our labourers or the servant on holidays or Sundays. Till he will complete his lunch I was to wait to take the pots back home. I used to chat with wahab mam. He was a nice gentle man ,having all knowledge of his sheep. He has gathered a special strain of sheep that had a brown wool colour. The brown or whitish wool chider (white colour chider) were famous and given as wedding gifts to the bride-groomes.The whitish chider was a symbol of status and only the numberdars and Khowaja used to wear them.
The wahab shiek has a small loom at is home where he used to weave the chaders.He had pre-paid buyers the contractor r the rich Khowaja or occasionally his friends. He would price them at exuberant price and during my youth I wished one but could not purchase as they were very costlier. I had one which was burned by my kangri and had to be converted into a coat, which later was reversed as a coat for my younger brother in 1967,therafter I loosed its tract.
The wahab shiek thus made good money and was one of the best persons in the village. He lived a life of widower. His wife has died in his forties or late thirties leaving three sons, Gulla (GH.MOHMAMD)Ahad (AB Ahad) and Kaliq shiek .The three brothers had a age difference of 2-3 years and when I knew them in 1963-65 ,they were in full youth and used to be the permanent labourers with the ama koel as labourers. They and contractor were happy with one another as they did not need daily payments as they were well off at home from the income of sheep. They used to get the money at a time when contractor got the bills. They were thus permanent labourers of the contractor.
As the contractor was from our mullah ,I used to interact with them and wahab kak. I was told Wahab mam did not remarry as he feared the step mother may tease his sons ,so always cooked the meals for his sons ,till Gulla was grown up and took the job of his father. The three brothers were very friendly and were always together even after the death of Wahab mam. After the death of wahab mam, they were orphaned and shied to seek marriage for them. However ,at an adult age we heard they had a bride for Gulla the elder brother. They were a happy lot but ill luck would it be she did not survive for long and died while delivering a dead baby in the local hospital. This made them all sad as they were all seeking to play with the child .
The Ahad shiek next son was a bit hard of hearing and he was married to women Sayeedia, who gave birth to Lassa Ghulam rasool shiek, we are talking about. In the mean time the younger brother Kaliq has suffered an illness and due to turmoil in kashmir was not able to be carried to Hospital 5 kgs away to due security scare during night hours at Kalousa and all along enrooted to Hospital, he died. This shocked the famiy.
Now with the birth of the Lassa they were engrossed in him and brought him up like a prince. After few years both his parents died and Gullah shiek left his work as shepherd and fully nursed this orphan like a prince. He was sick of his old home and thus constructed a new in his newly raised apple garden to relive Lassa of any past memories of his parents. He admitted him to school, an English medium one.It saw one him with him in a nice white shirt, red tie and blue half pant. He was very happy and bringing him up nicely.
With the advent of turmoil in kashmir and when security forced covered each and every corner of the valley, he was afraid to send him to higher secondary school, due to fear of the occupational forces picking up innocents and disappearing them. He married him in teens to a lady named Ashia from a neighbour village .They lived happily .
The young Lassa become a best mason and was asked to built buildings of Khowaja at sopure.His uncle never wanted to be parted .He made arrangements for him there to stay .Her wife was bearing and Gullah uncle never wanted her to be at her parents place, but arrangements for the delivery at his village. He was fearful and never wanted to have chance for negligence. The mother of the Ashes was staying as a guest to help her daughter. One fine morning with the help of local mid wife and the lady nurse she gave birth to a female child. They wanted to celebrate his birth along with her father and broke the news of her birth to Lassa through some labourer working her, the Lassa on hearing the news stopped the work and rushed to the market to purchase some clothes for her new born child and her mother.
He took some of his money from the Khowaja and fed sweets to all his fellow colleagues and rushed to catch the last bus to his village from sopur. In the sopure chowk he tried to board the bus and was having his bag of clothes for the child and mother and some sweets with hin.A burst of bullets from the overlooking Indian security forces came and pierced his body ,and he fell down in the open street to prove the naked barbarism of Indian occupational forces. The Asheia and gulla kak waited till late hours for him.Next morning the dead were brought to the home by sopure police.
This made gulla kak mad and he is cursing the day why he withdrew him from school in fear lest he may too become a rebellion Muja hid for the freedom of Kashmir. The Ashia is remarried and the girl child and all the assets of Lassa are with her.
The Gulla kak on my last visit to koel asked me, sir I have worked for the house of your father, can you tell me whether the Indian soldier who killed my hope of life and innocent Lassa was brought to justice. I was ashamed to answer him .
I have a question to those who adhore India to give answer to the Poor Gulla kak. Let PM Minoan Singh, the chedaberum or umer –mufti-azad trio answer me so that I can face gulla kak again.
Truely since then I visited the koel,my village several times but came back without showing my face to Gulla kak ,as I had failed to find answers to his question. All those high ranking Kashmir officers known to me failed to answer. At last one whispered sir, do not make yourself a blemish as it is all hypocrisy and no democray.We have orders to conceal security forces excesses.
This is my fiction nay truth of today. I appeal the chief commander of the Indian nation a mother too Mrs Partita Singh ji to answer the question of gulla kak, who even now does not know why his Lassa was killed .
