Make Baby’s First Halloween a Treat With These Handy Tips

Your baby’s first Halloween is a very exciting time for parents, who often search high and low for the perfect costume and prepare to take tons of pictures with friends and family. But before you and baby hit the trick or treat trail, read over these helpful tips to make sure the holiday is memorable for all the right reasons.

1) Avoid Constricting Costumes and Accessories – Masks and tight costumes can be very uncomfortable or frightening for baby, and many will cry or fight against any costume that restricts movement. There is a wide variety of costumes for babies and toddlers that use little hats instead of mask, leaving baby’s face uncovered. Make sure costumes also allow baby to move freely.

2) Watch Out for Other Costumes That May Be Too Scary – Babies can be quite frightened by the sight of other people in masks or costumes. Some people feel this is a time to teach the baby not to be scared, but they are often too young to understand that the ‘monster’ isn’t Daddy with his face painted.

3) Pay Attention to the Weather – Make sure the costume you choose will be appropriate for the weather if you plan on spending much time outside. Many costumes may be too warm if you live in an area with milder temperature. On the other hand, in the northern US you may need to layer clothes under the same costume in order to stay warm enough. It might even be necessary to wear a coat or jacket over the costume. Be sure that baby isn’t over or under-dressed.

4) Give Family & Friends a Call In Advance - You have special people in your life that you’ll want to share baby’s first Halloween with. A phone call ahead to these people to be sure they are going to be home will help ensure that pictures (or videos) of baby with this special someone can be taken. Try and make your plans up to a week ahead. You don’t want to be disappointed later when trying to scrapbook your child’s first trick or treat experience and someone is missing.

With just a little planning ahead, baby’s first Halloween can be fun for everyone, and trick or treating photos will be something to cherish for a lifetime. Whichever costume you decide on, if you follow these simple tips you can be sure to have a happy, fun and safe first Halloween with baby.
