Where to Stay on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight climate and sunshine record ensures that it is a popular holiday destination for tourists from all over the world. As the island welcomes all tourists to its golden shores, it’s recognised that a variety of accommodation is needed to cater for them, and the Isle of Wight doesn’t disappoint. For years, people have been arriving on the island to take advantage of its recuperative qualities. The Isle of Wight weather is sunny and warm – so much so that the island became a favourite of the Victorians when they wanted to take the sun whilst recovering from their various malaises, so Isle of Wight holidays have been popular for quite a few years.

Isle of Wight accommodation ranges from self-catering tents, caravans and chalets to luxury hotels, with everything else in-between. Holidays come in optional package form inclusive of the Isle of Wight ferry crossing, which prove popular with a lot of tourists, especially with groups travelling by coach. With arrival points at East Cowes, Yarmouth, Fishbourne, Cowes and Ryde, you can plan your holiday accommodation and choice of travel route to most benefit you, although with the island being only 23 miles by 13 miles in size, wherever you’re based on the island, it won’t take you very long to reach your destination.

As well as the main holiday resorts of Shanklin, Sandown and Ventnor, with their hotels and boarding houses along the esplanades, Ryde, Cowes, Yarmouth and Freshwater are popular choices for holiday stays. The Isle of Wight is a year-round holiday destination and much of the accommodation will stay open to accommodate guests in any season. Many people enjoy Christmas and New Year breaks, and coach tours often include all-inclusive packages with hotel accommodation for the festive season.

Self-catering offers a tremendous flexibility especially for families with children, and all over the island, there are holiday sites which provide camping, caravans or chalets. Some of these sites are Holiday Centres which have on-site facilities such as swimming pools, shops, entertainment and launderettes, etc. Whether you prefer to be in the middle of all the action, or somewhere a bit quieter, you’ll find exactly the kind of holiday centre you’re looking for. Some examples include Nodes Point at St Helens, Gurnard Pines at Cowes, Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park, Languard Holiday Park and Lower Hyde Holiday Park at Shanklin and Thorness Bay Holiday Park.

Holiday cottages are popular especially amongst groups of friends or family. Renting a cottage for a week or two can be economically priced when the cost is shared between several people. When booking any accommodation, it’s important to check that all the facilities you require are available. Things to consider would be whether a cot and high chair are available if you have babies, wheelchair access and suitability for disabled people (many of the establishments can be on steep hills although there are many in flat areas); whether bedding is included in self-catering holiday lets and what you will need to bring with you, what shower, laundry and shopping facilities there are. Whether you are looking for a small guest house, a holiday park or a luxury hotel with a lift, the Isle of Wight has a wonderful and varied selection of holiday establishments to suit you.

Pets are very important and many sites and some hotels will allow dogs but it’s important to check when making a booking. Some holiday makers like to stay in hotels where it’s adults only, so check whether or not the hotel is suitable for children.

Farm holidays are another option. As much of the Isle of Wight is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, why not take advantage of staying in a quieter part of the island where you’re able to walk amid the beautiful countryside and see all the farm animals. Accommodation providers all over the island offer bed and breakfast or self-catering for this kind of holiday.

Some holiday makers may prefer to either stay in a bed and breakfast establishment or in a hotel with meals inclusive. Many people return year after year because once they’ve visited the Isle of Wight, they fall in love with it, so you may find that you need to book up early so as to ensure you get booked into the accommodation of your choice.

Throughout the year, events that attract many tourists are held on The Isle of Wight, such as The Isle of Wight Festival in June, Cowes Week in August and The Bestival which is held later in the year. The bank holidays are very busy and popular with families and there are always events planned such as the Scooter Rally which has enthusiasts attending from all over Europe. This needs to be taken into account when booking, so the best advice is to book well in advance so as not to be disappointed.
