Nursery Preparation For The New Baby
It is always exciting welcoming a new baby to the family and part of the excitement is nursery preparation. It is especially exciting if the baby is the first arrival. Mom and dad will probably have lots of help with grandparents and aunts and uncles and friends wanting to pitch in and help. There will no doubt be a baby shower that will add necessary items for the new addition such as clothes and toys.
Preparing a nursery for the baby is probably the most important aspect of the entire project. There are walls to paint or paper, baby furniture to put in place as well as to fill the room with clothes and toys. Setting up a room for a new baby is easy if there is a plan. The first item on the list will be to determine a theme for the room. If the sex of the child is known, deciding on the theme will be easy. If not, deciding a theme will be a bit of a challenge. Maybe the theme of the room will be no theme at all. The plan may be to paint or wallpaper the room a neutral color and add a matching carpet. Whatever the plan, once the theme is in place, the rest will fall into place.
Furniture will probably be the number two spot on the list. The essential pieces of furniture are a changing table, crib, hamper, dresser, toy box and perhaps a bookcase. The location of the crib is critical as it should be in an area where the temperature will remain somewhat constant and is accessible by as many sides as possible. The middle of the room away from windows is a workable place or diagonally to a corner. A round crib seems to make the most sense, but a rectangular crib has worked for many a year. The changing table and dresser should be together, or a dresser that doubles as a changing table will be a space saver. Mom certainly wants to economize her steps when getting the baby ready for the day. Hamper and a diaper pail might be positioned close to the door for easy access. A toy box and book case can fit anywhere in the room. Do not forget to save a corner of the room for a rocking chair for those late-night feedings and calming sessions.
Once the furniture is in place, baby proof the room as much as possible. Electric outlets should have covers and windows have child proof locks. If windows will be open in the babys room during the summer, make sure the windows have a secure, locking screen in place. Add padding to any sharp corners the baby may encounter when they get to the toddling stage. A consideration may be to bolt furniture in place such as the dresser and book case to prevent tipping in the event the baby turns out to be a climber. If there are stairs, a gate is necessary to prevent falling.
It is never too early to start nursery preparations for the new arrival. In order for the room to be fresh, paint and wallpaper as soon as possible, preferably making that the first order of business. Even though there will be months and months before the baby arrive, time will pass very quickly and suddenly there will be a new arrival being welcomed home for the first time.
