Turning small steps into giant leaps

Choosing the right baby shoes may seem like a small matter, but if you consider that the average adult will walk around 185 000 kilometres in a lifetime, it’s a step not to be taken lightly.
The foot comprises 26 bones and 35 joints which are supported by lots of ligaments. When babies are born, they only have 22 of these 26 bones in their feet – the remainder will develop as they grow up.A baby’s foot bones are made from pliable, soft cartilage and are more prone to damage, and therefore their baby shoes need to provide appropriate protection.
When they are ready, anytime from around eight to 18 months, babies will start walking and are estimated to take approximately 170 steps a minute. That’s a long way for a baby to travel, so it’s important that baby’s shoes do the job properly!
But how do you choose the right children’s shoes ?
There should be no compromise on softness and pliability. And for the softest shoes, leather is always the best choice – and for kids’ shoes handcrafted from sheepskin lleather with flexible rubber soles, the best choice is See Kai Run.
Based in the US, See Kai Run manufactures children’s shoes to the strictest international health and functionality benchmarks and has been awarded the seal of approval from the American Podiatric Medical Association. See Kai Run now has a dedicated website for Australia and New Zealand, so ordering fun, funky and functional baby and children’s shoes online is done in a few easy…. steps !
Kids’ shoes should fit securely but not tightly. The longest toe should be between one and two centimetres from the end of the shoe. This gap should be checked regularly as children’s feet do grow rapidly.  Poor fitting could lead to foot problems later on.
Importantly, the foot should not slip around the shoe which could cause damage to the child’s heel or toe.  Sandals should be securely strapped over the instep whilst closed shoes need soft collars for comfortable support.
The sole of the shoe should be flat and flexible, especially in the area where the ball of the foot sits. The heel cup of kids’ shoes should fit firmly and comfortably but not tightly, with the foot supported by the shoe’s straight inner edge.
Shoes should not have a pointed toe which would restrict freedom of movement.
There are three different collections in the See Kai Run range of children’s shoes, the first is for babies (0 – 18 months), the second for younger kids (3 – 8 years) and finally, the ‘Eleven Collection’ (kids up to 11).
When a child is around 16 to 18 years of age, their feet will be fully developed.Toeing the line when it comes to choosing baby shoes will be the best way to making sure your little one turns little steps into giant leaps.
