Planning a baby shower

Baby showers are wonderful for new mothers.  Not only will she enjoy the gifts, but also the show of friendship and support is a boost to any new mother’s spirit.  Baby showers are typically thrown in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.  The mother-to-be can be quite uncomfortable by then: whether it’s being nervous about the delivery, anxious about being a new mother, tired from carrying the extra weight, or being unable to sleep at night, a baby shower can be just the event to brighten her day.

When planning a baby shower, decide if you want a specific theme (many people like to base theirs on nursery rhymes).  You can also design the shower around the theme the parents have chosen for the nursery room or based on the gender.  In that case, sometimes showers for a baby girl could include fairies, butterflies, flowers, unicorns and plenty of pink and purple.  For a baby boy, it could be focused on sports, robots, cars or trains.  These are just some basic ideas to get you started, but make sure to also think about the parents and what they may be interested in for their newborn.  When planning the shower, have fun and be creative

Some people say they dread playing games at a baby shower, but with the right games and enthusiasm, you can really turn a baby shower into quite the party!  Here are a number of classic and popular baby shower games that you can organize at your party:

1.   “Baby Names Scramble.”  Each person receives a list of baby names that have been scrambled and must unscramble them within a set amount of time.  A good twist to the game is to include unusual names to make the game more of a challenge.

2.   Simple Memory Games.  Place baby related items in a closed box with a fist size hole in the side.  Set a time limit for each guest to reach inside the box and feel the items.  Or the same items can be presented on a tray allowing your guests a set amount of time to view the items.  Then each guest writes down as many items as they can remember.  The one with the most correct answers wins.

3.  “Dirty Diaper.”  This popular game is sure to get quite a  reaction from your guests!  Melt or smash mini candy bars into diapers and have your guests attempt to identify them.  They can smell each “dirty diaper”, but no tasting allowed.  The person who can name the most candy bars correctly wins!

4.  This isn’t a game but a fun activity. Each guest receives a piece of paper  with an age in the corner.  Each guest has to provide a piece of advice they would give the newborn at that age.  Everyone will share their bit of advice, and the slips are saved to  give to the child to read at each age.

Once all the games are over, it’s time to reward your guests with some baby shower favors.  Choosing baby shower favors can be overwhelming with all the choices out there.  A good strategy is to base your favors on your theme.  If you do not have a particular theme, it’s also a good idea to just pick items that you feel will make your guests happy.  Some practical gifts include manicure sets, lip balm, or mini picture frames.  A popular idea is filling up a small container with candy or mints, which is something you can customize fairly easily and buy in large quantities.  A nice touch on all your favors (if possible) is to personalize them with the date and mother’s or baby’s names.

Just remember, planning a baby shower should not be stressful.  Make simple decisions that you feel would be the most enjoyable for your guests and relax.
