Baby Sonogram – Seeing Your Baby For The First Time

Being pregnant is one of the most exciting and wondrous miracles that a woman can go through.  This is truly a magical time, not just for the mommy to be but for the rest of the family as well.  No matter whether this is your first child or your third, being pregnant is a magical experience.  With the aide of technology, a woman can actually get to see her baby long before he or she is due to be born and it allows the parents the option to find out the sex of the baby.

Being able to see your baby while still in the womb is done through what is called a sonogram or an ultrasound.  There are two main reasons that a sonogram is performed which are for medical reasons to check the status of the baby to detect any medical issues and to for the parents to see their child before it is out of the womb. This allows the doctor to get a visual of the baby so that they can detect certain issues early on so that they can treat any medical conditions before the baby is born.

There are several types of sonograms that can be done while a woman is pregnant.  A transvaginal scan is used at the beginning of the pregnancy and it is done internally through the vagina.  Most women are used to the standard or advanced sonograms which are done by using a transducer over the stomach or abdomen.  These types of ultrasounds will produce a 2-D image of the fetus and help to detect certain problems.

There are more advanced types of sonograms that allow the parents to actually see an image of the fetus rather then an outline and these are called 3-D ultrasound and 4-D (Dynamic 3-D) ultrasound.  There is also a Fetal Echocardiography which allows doctors to detect heart defects.

Many women worry about these tests doing harm to their unborn child or themselves but there is no reason to fear a sonogram.  Doctors have been researching the effects of sonograms for over 35 years and there is no evidence that a sonogram will harm the mother or the child.  It is perfectly safe to have sonograms performed and it is recommended to have them done to help you have a healthy baby.

For more information on sonograms, talk with your doctor.  Together you and your doctor can choose the right sonogram for your baby’s needs.  Many women prefer to have a 3-D sonogram performed as it allows them to see their precious little in an amazing way.
