Too Much Black Is Too Much Of A Bad Thing

Black and white are the two extremes. Black is the complete lack of light and white is the fullness of light. Black represents emptiness and white, fullness. The mystique attached to black is undeniable and it’s understandable that it is the color of choice for many. Some just go too far.

The group that uses black to best effect is probably bikers. The biker chooses black because he wants to look intimidating. He wears black leather, from his boots to his leather pants and all the way up to the black helmet he puts on before he gets on his gleaming black motorbike with its shiny chrome detailing.

Fashion designers often like to wear black, as well. They do it a little differently, choosing to wear expensive, tailored clothing. Instead of the biker’s chrome highlighting, the fashion designer will wear a black sport watch with a chrome face. While the biker makes a statement of strength and defiance with his color of choice, the fashion designer makes a minimalist statement that shows he has style and taste.

There is some logic to the above examples. A statement is forcefully made. Some people get carried away with ebony, though. Take goths, for instance. Everything they have is black and it gets a little ridiculous. When their lipstick, their house, their car and everything else that have is all the same, it doesn’t inspire fear or respect, it inspires ridicule! Really, who needs black baby furniture! That’s just absurd.

Black is symbolic of everything dark, mysterious and deadly. It is connected with words like shadowy, somber and funereal. It is the color of pessimism, while white is associated with optimism. It is hard to understand why anyone would want to make their entire life reflect the dark side.

In between black and white are all the colors of the rainbow. The dance of life is in the play of color. Take a pure white light and shine it into a prism. It is broken up into a dazzling array of color. White light is what gives life its color and richness.

That’s all good, but it is just as easy to get carried away with white as it is with its opposite. Some people wear only white as their statement of purity. In a way, though, that can be seen as a denial of life, too. All the colors of the rainbow are what life is all about! We’re an amalgam of black, white and every color in between. With so many colors to choose from, why would you not want to try them all?
