Vick Has New-found Respect For Animals
In 2009, Vick was not probably the most popular man within the NFL or on People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals message boards. Vick was operating a bloody dogfighting ring from his Virginia home. Some wrote the former NFL superstar off as a nuisance to society, while others seemed more willing to extend the olive branch of tolerance, so long as Vick worked to redeem himself. As the Huffington Post accounts, Vick appears to be convincing more people that he’s sincere about making amends.
Animal rights taught by Michael Vick
Vick has had done well for himself on the football field this year, regardless of that he isn’t letting it distract him from doing right by the animal loving community. At Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Conn., Vick recently spoke about animal welfare and also the mistakes he made by participating in canine blood sport. It’s one of a string of public appearances the former owner of “Bad Newz Kennels” has made since returning from his 18-month prison sentence for dogfighting. He is trying to reach out to children in hopes they’ll follow the right path instead of the wrong, and will learn from his mistakes as outlined by the Huffington Post.
Forced to grow up, doing it nevertheless
Bad Newz Kennels was busted by the police, Vick didn’t just turn himself in. Had Vick not been turned in, many assume he would still be running a dog fighting ring to this day. Regardless, Michael Vick says that his experience has forced him to mature and become more empathetic. .
“I didn’t really care what people felt about animals,” Michael Vick said most recently to the brand new Haven Register. “I didn’t care about the welfare of animals.”
Today, Vick seems to be on the road to recovery. Vicks had been given a second chance at life that only a few of the dogs at Bad Newz Kennels were given, but at least he is trying to make up for past mistakes.
Baby steps toward empathy
The Post states the fact that Vick’s dogs were forced into fighting and it wasn’t a choice they had any control over is what made a huge impact on Vicks. When Vick’s children ask him for a pet, he’s reminded of his past actions. What makes it even harder is that Vick’s can never own an animal again as part of his sentencing.
